How to Check The Refrigerant Level of an AC? Simple Steps

It is summer, and all you want to do is relax with the AC on. Who wants to step out in the heat?

So you kick back, switch the AC on, and start watching TV. It has been a few minutes, and you are still feeling hot. Something is wrong.

How to Check The Refrigerant Level of an AC?

Like every other machine, the air conditioner may also bump into problems, and one of the most common ones is cooling. It may not cool like it is supposed to or it may cool less than normal. This usually happens because the refrigerant is running out. Low refrigerant means low or zero cooling. However, there may be other reasons too. So, before deciding to get the refrigerant replaced you should learn what level it is at. Let’s see how to do that:

It is icy

The refrigerant line will have ice built up on it if it is running low. The ice forms due to low pressure, which is a direct consequence of low refrigerant level. Due to low pressure, the evaporator coil freezes and the air around the refrigerant line freezes as well.

So, if there’s ice, you know the level is really low and needs to be taken care of.

It is noisy

Air conditioners are not supposed to hiss at us or create a bubbling noise. If you hear a noise, it means the refrigerant is leaking, and that is why its level is low. This is the most common reason behind low refrigerant levels.

Based on the problem, you can choose a solution. A leak would mean replacement or repair and ice formation may mean more refrigerant. Either way, we suggest that you leave it to your AC technician because there is quite a lot of technicality involved in finding the problem and implementing the solution.

Also, if your AC is not cooling and you see neither of the aforementioned signs, the problem could be in the thermostat or the compressor. Only an expert can tell for sure.

Note: A hefty electricity bill is also quite a big sign that you need to look into your refrigerant level immediately.

Now that you know what signs to look for, we recommend that you do it immediately and avoid all hassle. Ignoring such problems can lead to massive issues, which you definitely would not want to encounter. All the best.
